There's a recurring error we see almost every week in customer service messages: someone orders a bedding set "for a 140 bed" and receives a 200x200 cm cover that they find immense. Or the opposite, a 140x200 cover arrives on a double bed and sadly hangs thirty centimeters off the wrong side. In both cases, the product is compliant. It's the reference point that was wrong.
Because in France, a duvet cover is never named after the width of the bed. It's named after the duvet it's meant to cover. And between a 140 cm wide bed and the duvet you put on it, there's a minimum 60 cm overhang, which is called the "fall." It's this discrepancy that confuses everyone, and that's exactly what we're going to clarify here.

The 3 duvet sizes that cover 95% of French beds
The French bedding market has standardized around three duvet sizes. All others exist, but they are custom-made and ordered from a specialist, not from a merchandise store.
140x200 cm: the single size
This is the duvet for a 90 cm wide single bed, suitable for a child's bedroom, a teenager's room, or a student studio. The overhang is 25 cm on each side, which is enough to tuck in without dragging on the floor. A 90x190 or 90x200 bed systematically takes this size.
200x200 cm: the standard double size
The perfect square. It covers the duvet for a 140 cm wide double bed, the famous "double bed" found in most French master bedrooms. Overhang of 30 cm per side. This is also the size chosen by couples sleeping in a 140 cm bed who want a blanket that doesn't slip off at the first turn.
240x220 cm: the queen and king size
For a 160 cm (queen) or 180 cm (king) bed. The 240 cm width provides a 40 cm overhang on a 160 cm bed, and 30 cm on an 180 cm bed. Be careful: this is a heavy size, around 1.4 kg dry in microfiber, and it fills a 7 kg washing machine drum by itself.
And intermediate sizes?
The 220x240 cm also exists, oriented "French style" (taller than wide). The 260x240 is seen on very large beds. These sizes are rare in ready-to-wear home furnishings and almost non-existent for licensed products. If your bed is outside the three standard sizes, measure your current duvet first and foremost: that's the only data that matters.
What size for a 90, 140, 160 or 180 cm bed?
Here's the one-line calculation rule: duvet width = mattress width + 60 cm. This 60 cm margin is divided into 30 cm of overhang on each side. This is what prevents the duvet from uncovering your shoulders as soon as your bedmate pulls it a little.
The 90 cm bed case
90 + 50 = 140 cm wide. The 140x200 format is the only relevant one. Some parents go for 200x200 for a child's bed to "have more coverage": bad idea, the excess drags on the floor, collects dust, and the child gets tangled in it. The 140 cm bed case
140 + 60 = 200 cm. The 200x200 is the default answer. If there are two of you and one pulls the duvet, you can switch to 240x220 on a 140 cm bed: the overhang increases to 50 cm per side, which solves the problem but makes the bed look very dressed, almost cumbersome in a small room.
The 160 cm bed case
160 + 60 = 220 cm, but the commercially available size is 240x220. So you gain an extra 20 cm of overhang, which is comfortable. This is the most sold size among couples with a queen size bed.
The 180 cm bed case
180 + 60 = 240 cm. The 240x220 fits perfectly. However, the 220 cm length becomes a bit short if your mattress is 200 cm and you like to pull the duvet up to your chin. Some sleepers then switch to 260x240, a size we don't offer for our bedding sets.

💡 Did you know?
The duvet cover as we know it, closed on three sides with an opening at the bottom, only became widespread in France in the 1970s. Before that, people slept between two flat sheets with a blanket on top, and they changed the sheets without ever touching the blanket. The switch to the duvet halved the time it took to make a bed, which largely explains its success.
What a bedding set really contains (and what it doesn't)
The word "parure" (set) leads to confusion, and it's the second source of disappointment after size. A bedding set, in French textile terminology, refers to the duvet cover + matching pillowcases. Nothing else.
What's in the package
- The duvet cover, printed on the top, plain or with a more discreet pattern on the back depending on the model.
- One pillowcase measuring 50x75 cm for 140x200 sizes.
- Two pillowcases measuring 50x75 cm for 200x200 and 240x220 sizes.
- A closure, most often with snap buttons or a simple folded opening at the bottom of the cover.
What's not in the package
- The duvet itself. You're covering your existing duvet, not buying a new one.
- The fitted sheet. It's sold separately and chosen according to your mattress height, not the duvet.
- The pillows. Pillowcases are covers, not actual pillows.

Microfiber, brushed polyester, cotton: how material makes a difference
Our SpongeBob bedding sets are made of 100% polyester microfiber. This is neither a defect nor a coincidence: it's the only material that properly holds a high-definition digital print over the entire surface, without the solid yellow areas turning mustard after a few washes.
Polyester microfiber
Fibers with a diameter less than 1 decitex, tight weave around 90 to 110 g/m². It dries quickly (two to three hours on a drying rack compared to six to eight for thick cotton), hardly wrinkles, and accepts sublimation printing which embeds the ink into the fiber instead of depositing it on top. Practically: the pattern doesn't crack, peel, or fade with friction.
Percale cotton
More breathable, cooler in summer, but it doesn't handle full-surface printing well. On cotton, a large SpongeBob pattern eventually breaks down or lightens. That's why full-panel printed licensed products are almost always made of polyester.
Polycotton
The 50/50 compromise. It exists but combines the disadvantages: less colorfastness than pure polyester, less coolness than pure cotton.
🧠 Tip
Microfiber heats up faster than cotton but wicks away moisture less effectively. If you sweat at night, keep a flat cotton sheet between you and the cover: you preserve the print and gain breathability. The sheet washes separately, more often, and the bedding set wears out twice as slowly.

How to read a product sheet without making a mistake
On each product sheet, the announced dimension is that of the cover, not the bed. A dropdown menu offers 140x200, 200x200, and 240x220. The number of pillowcases automatically follows the chosen size. If you have any doubts, measure your current duvet flat on the floor, from seam to seam: this is the reference measurement.
Washing, drying, and colorfastness
A printed bedding set is not fragile, but it has rules. Respecting them makes the difference between a vivid yellow after three years and a faded yellow after six months.
Temperature and program
30 °C, synthetic cycle, spin at 800 rpm maximum. Polyester does not tolerate high temperatures: above 40 °C, the fibers begin to slightly retract and the print loses sharpness. At 60 °C, you risk a visible shrinkage of 2 to 3%, or up to 6 cm on a 200 cm cover.
Detergent and fabric softener
Liquid detergent without bleaching agents. Sodium percarbonate present in many powdered detergents attacks yellow pigments first. Fabric softener, on the other hand, leaves a greasy film on the microfiber that dulls the print and reduces breathability: we skip it.
Drying
No tumble dryer, or only on a delicate cold program. Outdoors, a microfiber cover dries in two to three hours, turned inside out to prevent direct sunlight from fading solid colors. You'll find the same logic in our complete guide on caring for SpongeBob products.
Ironing
Unnecessary in 90% of cases: microfiber comes out of the machine almost smooth. If you insist, iron at a maximum of 110 °C, on the reverse side, without direct steam on the print.
⚠️ Mistake to avoid
Never wash a printed bedding set with terry towels. The loops of the towel rub the surface of the microfiber throughout the cycle and create a veil of white lint that dulls the pattern. Wash the bedding set alone, or with other smooth polyester items. The same applies to new jeans, whose indigo easily transfers to yellow.
Matching the bedding set to the rest of the room
A full-surface printed duvet cover is about 4 m² of pattern in the center of the room. That's a lot. The rule we apply in our decor guides is simple: only one strong element, the rest in color accents.
If the bedding set is the strong point

If you want a complete set
Here, you need a palette. Bikini Bottom blue and sponge yellow are the two pivotal colors. A matching lamp or night light and a framed poster are enough to structure the room without overwhelming it.

Which duvet cover for a 140x190 bed?
A 200x200 cm. The length of the mattress (190 or 200 cm) makes no difference to the choice of duvet cover: only the width matters, and the standard duvet length of 200 cm covers both cases.
Is the duvet included with the set?
No. A set includes the duvet cover and matching pillowcases. You simply slide your existing duvet inside.
How many pillowcases are included?
One 50x75 cm pillowcase for the 140x200 size, two 50x75 cm pillowcases for the 200x200 and 240x220 sizes.
Can I wash the set at 60°C?
No. Printed polyester should be washed at 30°C. Above 40°C, you risk 2-3% shrinkage and a loss of print sharpness.
Does the cover shrink on the first wash?
Not if you respect the 30°C. Polyester microfiber is dimensionally stable, unlike cotton which often loses 1-2% on the first machine wash.
Is the pattern printed on both sides?
It depends on the models. Duvet covers with a giant portrait are printed on the top, with a plain or simplified patterned back. The product description specifies the appearance of each side.
Is this suitable for a 70x140 children's bed?
No, a cot requires a 100x140 cm duvet cover, a size we do not offer. The 140x200 starts with a 90 cm single bed.
Can a SpongeBob duvet cover be put on a sofa bed?
Yes, by taking the width of the unfolded sleeping area. A 140 cm sofa bed takes a 200x200. Just remember to put the duvet cover away during the day: it's not designed to be sat on.
