The launch of Kamp Koral wasn't without controversy. Stephen Hillenburg, the original creator of SpongeBob, had explicitly asked Nickelodeon never to create spin-offs of his series. He felt the franchise should remain a single, coherent entity faithful to his artistic vision. Hillenburg passed away in November 2018 — and by 2019, Nickelodeon had announced not one but several spin-offs. For many fans, it's a direct betrayal of the creator's wishes.
