Bath linen follows standardized formats in France. Remembering five dimensions is enough to never go wrong.
The Five Standard Formats
Wash mitt — 15 x 21 cm. For face and hands, or for a child learning to wash themselves.
Guest towel — 30 x 50 cm. The sink size. Useful as an extra when several people share the bathroom.
Hand towel — 50 x 100 cm. The most common size. Sufficient for a child up to ten or twelve years old, and for an adult who prefers to dry quickly rather than wrap themselves up.
Bath towel — 70 x 140 cm. The standard adult size. You can wrap yourself in it, it covers the shoulders, and fits on a standard 60 cm towel rack.
Large bath sheet — 90 x 180 cm. Generous size, often chosen by larger individuals or for shared use. Be careful: at 550 g/m², this size weighs almost 900 grams when dry, and much more when wet.
The Choice According to the Person

Grammage: What g/m² Means
Grammage measures the density of cotton per square meter. It is the only figure that truly predicts comfort, absorbency, and drying time.
The Four Levels
300 to 400 g/m² — lightweight. Dries in three to four hours, takes up little space, absorbs little. Useful for travel or the gym, insufficient for daily home use.
450 to 550 g/m² — standard household. The best compromise. Decent absorbency, dries in six to eight hours in a ventilated room. This is the range for almost all licensed bath towels.
600 to 700 g/m² — hotel quality. Very absorbent and very soft, but heavy and long to dry: count twelve hours or more without ventilation, which promotes odors.
More than 700 g/m² — spa. Reserved for heated bathrooms with towel warmers. Without these, the towel never completely dries between showers.

A terry towel absorbs up to seven times its weight in water. A 70 x 140 cm bath towel at 500 g/m² weighs about 490 grams dry and can therefore hold more than three kilograms of water. Terry, Velour or Microfiber
Three constructions coexist in the patterned bath linen market, and they behave very differently.
Terry Cotton
Uncut thread loops that multiply the contact surface with water. This is the most absorbent and durable construction. Its drawback: printing is blurry on it, because the loop distorts the pattern. So it's kept for the reverse side.
Velour
Shorn loops that give a smooth, matte surface. The pattern is clear, the colors are vibrant, the touch is soft. However, absorbency drops by about a third compared to terry. Most character bath towels combine the two: printed velour on the front, terry on the back.
Microfiber
Very fine woven polyester, between 200 and 300 g/m². Dries in one hour, folds very small, accepts very precise photographic printing. But the feel is plastic and it only absorbs on the surface. What Printing Really Changes
Three concrete, rarely explained consequences when buying a large-patterned towel rather than a plain one.
1. Absorption is asymmetrical
The printed side wipes less well than the reverse. This is not a manufacturing defect; it's the trade-off for velour. In practice: dry yourself with the reverse, and save the printed side for appearance when the towel is hung.
2. Bright colors don't tolerate chlorine well
Bob's yellow and Patrick's pink are saturated shades that fade on contact with oxygenated detergents and "whitening" laundry detergents. A color-safe detergent is enough to keep them vibrant for several years without visible fading.
3. The pattern defines the towel's orientation
A towel with a full face oriented in one direction can only be folded neatly in one way. If you want a neat appearance on the towel rack, prefer a repeated pattern or an all-over design rather than a single centered face.

Washing, Drying, and Lifespan
A well-maintained towel lasts about 200 washes, or three to five years of family use. If poorly maintained, it becomes rough and non-absorbent in less than a year.
Temperature
40 °C for everyday use. 60 °C is only useful in case of illness in the household, and it wears out fibers twice as fast while attacking printed colors.
Fabric softener, the real culprit
This is the most common mistake. Fabric softener deposits a greasy film on the loops; this film makes the towel soft to the touch but blocks absorption. A towel that slides over the skin instead of absorbing has received too much fabric softener. Replace it with half a glass of white vinegar in the dispenser: same softening effect, without the film.
Drying
Hang the towel fully unfolded, never folded in half. A short tumble dry at low temperature fluffs up the loops; a long drying at high temperature breaks them and causes pilling on printed velour.
First wash
Wash the towel alone before first use. New towels shed lint and excess dye for two or three cycles. This first wash also develops their absorbency, which is not optimal right out of the package.
🧠 Tip
If your towels smell musty even after washing, run a 60 °C cycle with a glass of white vinegar and no detergent. This dissolves accumulated fabric softener residues in the fibers. The odor disappears in one cycle, and absorbency returns from the very next use.
Matching the Towel to the Rest of the Room
A towel with a large yellow face is a visually strong object. It works best in a neutral bathroom rather than in an already very colorful room.
The Single Focal Point Rule
Only one patterned element in the room. If you install a printed shower curtain, choose plain towels or ones with a subtle pattern. If the towels are the main feature, keep a plain curtain. Two large visuals facing each other can overwhelm a 4 m² room.

Ironing a terry towel. The iron permanently crushes the loops and can reduce absorbency by up to a third. On the printed side, direct heat can also damage the print and cause it to crack. A towel should never be ironed: it should be shaken before drying.
