SpongeBob Bedroom Rug: Which Size to Choose?

A SpongeBob bedroom rug is chosen on three numbers before it is chosen on its pattern: the dimensions in centimetres, the pile height in millimetres and the presence of a non-slip backing. In this collection the sizes on sale run from 40 × 60 cm for a bedside runner up to 160 × 200 cm for a living room, at prices between €32.90 and €42.90 depending on the model.

What size should you choose for the spot you are covering?

The most common mistake is measuring the room instead of measuring the free floor area. A bed, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers often take up half of a 12 m² bedroom. The useful size is calculated on what is left.

Under a bed: leave 50 to 70 cm showing on each side

The classic layout is to slide the rug under the bed, over the lower third of the base, and let it come out on both sides and at the foot. That overhang should measure 50 to 70 cm: it is the width needed for both feet to land on textile when you wake up, and not on cold tiles.

In practice that means a 140 × 200 cm for a 140 cm wide bed, and a 160 × 200 cm for a 160 cm bed. For a 90 cm single bed, a 120 × 160 cm is plenty and costs less.

Under a coffee table: at least 20 cm of margin all round

In a living room, the rug defines the seating area. The coffee table has to sit entirely on it with at least 20 cm of visible margin on all four sides. Below that margin the whole thing looks cramped and the table legs regularly end up straddling the edge.

A 110 × 60 cm coffee table therefore needs a minimum of 150 × 100 cm. The 100 × 150 cm in the collection matches that case exactly. If you also want the front legs of the sofa to rest on the rug — visually the most stable layout — move up to 120 × 160 cm or 160 × 200 cm.

In a hallway or along the bed: the runner sizes

The 40 × 120 cm and 60 × 180 cm sizes are runners. They work in a hallway, along a double bed, or in front of a kitchen worktop. Their weakness is well known: light and narrow, they slide more than the others. A non-slip underlay is not optional on these sizes, it is a condition of laying them.

Which sizes are actually sold in the collection?

Not every model comes in every size: the living-room models run from 40 × 60 cm to 160 × 200 cm, while the hallway models add the 40 × 120 cm and the 60 × 180 cm. The coverage column is there to compare two sizes honestly. Between a 100 × 150 cm and a 120 × 160 cm the gap is only 28 cm on one side, but the area goes from 1.50 m² to 1.92 m², which is 28 % more. That figure is what decides the effect in the room.

Non-slip, pile height, washing: the criteria that really count

The non-slip backing, and the underlay when there is none

A factory non-slip backing comes as rubber dots or a latex coating on the reverse. It works well for the first few months. It loses its grip after a few washes, and it works no miracles on a recently varnished wood floor.

The durable answer is a separate underlay: an open-mesh PVC or natural latex grid, sold by the metre, cut 2 cm smaller than the rug on each side so it stays invisible. It does three things at once — it stops the sliding, it cushions each step, and it keeps the back of the rug from marking the floor.

Pile height and door clearance

This is the point people always discover too late. A rug more than 15 mm thick overall blocks a door that opens into the room. Most interior doors are hung with 8 to 12 mm of clearance under the leaf.

The reflex to have before ordering: measure the gap between the bottom of your door and the floor by simply sliding a ruler under it. If you have less than 15 mm, choose a short-pile model, or lay the rug far enough from the door that the leaf never meets it on its swing.

Machine washing at 30 °C and flat drying

When the model allows it, washing is done at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, with no fabric softener — softener flattens the fibres and leaves a film that holds dust. The spin should stay low, 400 to 600 revolutions per minute at most.

The real constraint is not the temperature, it is the weight. A wet rug weighs two to three times its dry weight. Beyond 80 × 120 cm it no longer fits properly in a 7 kg drum, and the wash damages more than it cleans. For large sizes, clean spots locally with a sponge and warm soapy water, then rinse with a damp cloth.

Drying is done flat, on an open airer or across two trestles, never hung on a line: the weight of the water stretches the fibres and the rug never regains its shape. A tumble dryer is out of the question in all cases, the heat shrinks the backing and the rug buckles permanently.

Vacuuming: no rotating brush on long pile

On short pile, an ordinary vacuum passes without trouble. On long or looped pile, the rotating brush tears out fibres and creates bald patches within months. You then have to switch the turbo brush off, or use the hard-floor head, and work in the direction of the pile.

Compatibility with underfloor heating

Underfloor heating tolerates a rug, as long as it stays thin. Below 10 mm of total thickness the thermal resistance stays negligible and the heat rises normally. Beyond that the textile acts as insulation: the room heats up more slowly and the system uses more energy to compensate.

Child's bedroom, adult living room: which model for which space?

In a child's bedroom

The number one criterion is washability, ahead of the pattern. A child's bedroom floor gets felt-tip, chocolate and poster paint. A size that fits in the machine — 80 × 120 cm at most — is recoverable; a 140 × 200 cm is not.

In a living room or an adult work corner

Here the size matters more than washability, because upkeep is done with a vacuum rather than a machine. A 120 × 160 cm or a 160 × 200 cm structures the room and absorbs part of the sound reverberation, which is welcome in a tiled living room.

Safety: how do you keep a bedroom rug from sliding?

This point is not decorative, it is serious. An unsecured rug is a recognised cause of falls among older people and among young children who run. The risk comes from two mechanisms: the whole rug sliding on a smooth floor, and the corner lifting up and catching a foot.

Three measures settle most of it. A non-slip underlay cut to the right dimensions handles the first mechanism. Adhesive strips on the four corners handle the second — that is where the textile lifts first. Finally, avoid laying a rug immediately at the top or bottom of a staircase, and avoid laying it on top of another rug.
